Science Expo at Sierra Nevada College

To all parents and community members interested in sharing science with local youth,
We are currently seeking volunteers for the 2012 Science Expo to help us on four days (Monday through Thursday, March 12 – 15) at nine different two-hour sessions:

1.Monday, March 12 / morning FILLED
2.Monday, March 12 / early afternoon FILLED
3.Tuesday, March 13 / morning 8:45-10:45 am
4.Tuesday, March 13 / early afternoon 11:45-1:45 pm
5.Wednesday, March 14 / morning 9:15-11:15 am
6.Wednesday, March 14 / early afternoon 11:45-1:45 pm
7.Wednesday, March 14 / evening FILLED
8.Thursday, March 15 / morning 9:30-11:30 am
9.Thursday, March 15 / early afternoon 11:45-1:45 pm
This year’s theme is life scienceand activities will include cells, DNA, plants, bugs, fish, animals, etc. Please feel free to sign up for more than one session as we need 20 volunteers per session (9 sessions x 20 activities = 180 volunteer sign-ups!). Volunteers will need to be at the chosen or assigned activity station and ready to go prior to the start time indicated. You should also plan a few minutes following the end time in order to clean up and prepare materials for the next session.

Training is provided and no science experience is required. We will hold training events on Wednesday, March 7 and Thursday, March 8 in Incline Village. We are also available to train you for the activity station during the hour leading up to the start time (although, this can get a little chaotic) or over the telephone in advance of the event. Lastly, we are willing to travel to present information about the activity stations, but the activity materials will not all be available. Many of the stations require very little training and simply need a facilitator. Print-outs with activity descriptions will be available with detailed background about the science presented.

We could really use your help. It is important that students have early experiences in science so that they develop problem-solving skills that empower them to participate in an increasingly scientific and technological world.

Please contact volunteer coordinator Mary Danahey at marydanahey@gmail.com or (650) 743-2309 to help share science with the kids of our region.

Science Fair Judges Needed

We are in need of several more judges for the Incline Elementary School Science & Engineering Fair this year.  We need about 12 judges, so far we only have 6.  We would need them to be able to judge the kids’ projects, either experiments or inventions, from about 9am-2pm on Thurs. Feb. 16.

While a science or engineering background is helpful, the only requirements are that the judges not have any friends or family participating in the competition, and that they agree to follow the criteria set forth on the attached judging forms in evaluating the kids’ science projects or experiments.

Coffee and lunch is included, and it’s actually kind of fun.  This is the stage before the top projects are sent on to the Western Nevada Regional Science & Engineering Fair at UNR in March.

I have attached the judging forms, one for experiments and the other for inventions, so you can see what’s involved. Please forward this email to anyone you know who might be available to assist, and ask them to please reply to at jburau@jamesburau.com if interested.

The 7th Annual Youth Talent Show

The 7th annual Youth Talent Show is scheduled for Saturday, February 11th at IHS (this is a date change from what you may have seen announced previously).

Auditions will be held next week.

We will be holding auditions at IMS on Tuesday and Thursday directly after school in the forum.

We will be holding auditions at IES on Wednesday and Friday directly after school in the library (note that this will be at 2:20 on Wed. due to early release).

I don’t have any specific auditions scheduled at IHS but would love to have some IHS students participate – just contact me and we will set something up. I have already been contacted by the ROTC drill team and expect that they will be performing in multiple numbers.
Students will be able to audition first-come, first-served so make sure they get there early to put their names on the list. Please contact me directly if you need to make special arrangements.
Remember to bring music on a CD if that will be required. And we prefer that vocalists have their music recorded without the vocals – i.e. just the instrumentals. Please ask around – I know there are ways to do this or iTunes often has instrumental versions available.

We will head to the music room for any piano auditions.
At the time of auditions, I would also like to review what the costume will be so I can approve it – just a verbal description is fine at this point. I may ask to see the actual costume at a later date if necessary.
There will be stage rehearsal times (optional) during the week of the show and there will be a dress rehearsal on either Thursday or Friday prior to the show so try to keep the week open if possible.
I really do want to get as many acts as possible into the show but I need to see auditions that are prepared and ready to be performed for an audience.

Let me know if you have any questions.
