First Day of Kindergarten – supply coffee and treats for parents as they see their Kindergarten student off to their first day of school. One day only

Hospitality- provide snacks for various PTA and school functions like the holiday concert, MTM show etc. Most of these events are in the evening so this would work well for someone who is not free during the day, but still wants to volunteer. On going, but infrequent

Tile Project – help students in grade 5 create art tiles for the school walls and have the tiles mounted on the wall. This job is best suited to a 5th grade parent

Science Fair

The Incline Elementary School is having a science fair on Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013. We need around 20 judges to evaluate projects. The judges will be assigned in groups of 3 to different grades (ie., K-5). The 3 judges will review each project with the student(s) in the assigned grade and finally decide on 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. An award ceremony will be held at 5:30pm, same day. Judges are not required or expected to attend the ceremony. This year, the Western Nevada Science and Engineering Council has grouped the K-2 as class projects; no individual projects allowed. That said, there will only be 7-9 K-2 projects total. Inventions from K-2 are allowed, but not even a handful are anticipated. Grades 3-5 submit individual projects and/or inventions. If you have a child in elementary school, you can still participate! We will assign you to a grade your child is not in.

The day consists of arriving at 8:45am. Judging starts promptly at 9am and plan on it going until 2pm (some grades will go faster than others). Coffee will be provided in the morning to keep you on your toes! Sandwiches and soft drinks will be provided for lunch.

A “What judges are Looking for in a Science Fair Project” guide is attached for reference. As you can see, you don’t need a science/engineering degree or even a background in science/engineering to volunteer. We will meet briefly before the judging begins to go over what to do and how to do it. Also attached is the judging form for your reference. You will truly be delighted to participate in this event and see firsthand how proud the children are of their work.

The fair can’t happen without judges! Science education is a vital part of our children’s curriculum. Please consider volunteering your time to help further their education and love of science.

SOS Outreach Learn to Ski/Ride Program
Incline Elementary School Session at Northstar
Learn to Ski/Ride (LTR) is the largest and most fundamental SOS youth program for youth ages 8-18. It features a five day program and each day centers around one of five core values: courage, discipline, integrity, wisdom and compassion.
Benefits for Youth Participants:
•Program includes: •5-Day Lift ticket
•All necessary snowboarding/skiing equipment
•Professional instruction for all 5 days
•Snowsport Clothing, goggle and helmet
•Character development and core-value curriculum
•Positive staff and volunteer support
•Opportunity to enroll in University program upon
graduating from LTR
Learn to Ski/Ride Specifics:
•Program Fee: $55
•Group size: Maximum 25
•Adult–to-Youth ratio approximately 8:1

Game Night is Friday January 25 at 6:00pm. Come for dinner. Grade 5 will be selling pizza for $1.00 per slice, chips, soda, water and bake sale items.
Funds raised will help support the 5th grade outdoor education trip

Spirit Day and Family Fun Game Night- Friday, January 25

Students are asked to dress in the uniform/t-shirt of their favorite team. This can be a professional sports team, a school team or a team that the student has been involved in.
The Family Fun Game Night is a fun opportunity for families and friends to get together to play board games, enjoy some food and maybe win a prize. We will hav games available,but you are welcome to bring your own games if you like.
As an added bonus the school will offer an opportunity for parents to learn about the Infinite Campus program and gain math-tips.
Food will be available or sale, some of the proceeds will benefit the 5th grade Outdoor Education trip. Please join us for dinner.

IES PTA By-Laws update

IES PTA is required by the State PTA to update our By-Laws this year. IES PTA will be voting on the revised By-Laws at our next meeting.

There are a few changes to this revision of the By-Laws. The most significant of which is the definition of a quorum.

Please review and address any questions, comments or concerns to the Board.

The next IES PTA meeting is on Tuesday November 27 from 5:30 to 6:30pm in the teacher’s lounge. We have scheduled evening meetings so that working parents or parents who are otherwise busy during the day have a chance to attend meetings, so please put the PTA meeting on your calendar.

CALLING ALL SCIENCE ENTHUSIASTS

Get ready for a fabulous and fun Science Fair at I.E.S. on December 4th from 8:30 AM – 2:00 PM hosted by Sierra Watershed Education Program (SWEP). During the fair, each grade level will get to explore 10 different science stations such as: Smelly Balloons, Tornado Tube Racer, Bubble Science, Ray Gun, etc. while learning about the scientific method. Parent volunteers are welcomed, encouraged and quite frankly, needed. (There will be an informal training the night before to help parents get acquainted with their station.)
